The most important lesson learnt in my UIR journey is the topic on the evaluation criteria. Previously, I had no clue that internet resources could be evaluated using certain criterias such as coverage, accuracy, authority, curreny, etc. This evaluation could be used to judge whether there is quality in the resource or whether the information in the resource is useful or not. In future, I would be able to determine which website is best to refer to.
For this week, we had our second class test. After which, I send the 2 resources for my assignment 2 to Carmen. From there, we did the bibliography. Although we had done bibliography before, it was quite different this time. As the examples on the websites were rather different from what we had done, we were unsure if we were on the right track. However, we decided to leave it for the time being and approach the lecturer on the next lesson.
Again, we do not need to report to school for UIR this week. However, we would need to post our individual research findings on Wiki based on our assignment topic. At first, I was not sure what was required from us. After asking around from my classmates and seeing how others had done, I got a rough idea on what to do for Wiki.
After which, I started to read up my research and post up my discoveries. From my research, I found out the cause and prevention of leukemia in babies and young children. I could not imagine young kids, who still have a long way to go in their life, having cancer cells growing in them and fighting against them. Luckily, the ways to prevent this cancer was found. I hope this would greatly reduce the number of people from developing with the cancer. Apart from this, I found out that sun exposure may reduce the chance of getting breast cancer in light skin pigmentation women. There were researches done to conclude that women with lighter skin pigmentation would have a lower chance in getting breast cancer if they were to participate in outdoor activities or exposure to sunlight more.

For this week, we had E-learning. I log on to OLE and had my answers posted up. For practical, we were supposed to evaluate the second resource that we had found from the previous practical. The evaluation was similar to the previous one. Thus, I had a better view of what is needed to be done for this practical. As for the internet discussion forum, I had not sign up to any forum yet. I would be finding for the appropriate forum before posting a new discussion topic or respond to one that is related to my assignment topic.
Today, we had our first class test. After which, we formed groups for the assignment 2. My group consists of Carmen, Zhihao, Elin, and myself. We went on to decide on the topic, “Developments in Cancer research”, for our assignment. Each of us signed up for a wiki account and created a group page.
After choosing our topic, we went on to do our individual parts where we had to find 2 relevant websites based on our assignment topic and evaluate them based on the templates provided. The keywords I used: cancer research development

For this week lab, I have chosen the topic: “Discuss the developments in Cancer research” for my assignment 1. We were supposed to search for 3 resources using 3 different search facilities. I used the same key words, cancer development research, for all the 3 search facilities.

The 3 search facilities had their results presented in the same format. It shows the link of the resource, as well as the title and description of the resource.
One big difference is the number of results produced. 98,400,000 results were shown on Search Engine. On the Meta search engine, it produced only 60 results and 1398 on the subject directory. Besides that, the results were numbered on both Meta Search Engine and Subject Directory while Search Engine does not have their results numbered.
Search Engine produced quite a number of results. However, most of the time, some of the results are not relevant to what the researchers are searching for.
Meta Search Engine allowed doing searches in tandem with a number of search engines.
Subject Directories allowed users to do keyword searches.
Overall, Search Engine best meet my searching needs. Although it produced results that are irrelevant at times, the first page shows relevant results most of the time. Also, there is “similar pages” on Google Search Engine. It would bring me to links which are somewhat related to my research.

Organization This website includes the research development of cancer and also information to contact the organization. The site has got links that a service of the institute. Subject-based This website has a subject focus which focuses on science and technology for cancer research. The search facility I used was Google and the keywords I used to search was- cancer development research . Through the research, I found out that a personal site can be maintained by someone alone or part of an organization. A organization site can be maintained by an organization while a subject-based site would focus on a particular subject.

Personal
One of my favourite website is www.youtube.com . This is a rather common website and is used by many. It can be used to watch many different kind of shows, from a very short video of a few seconds to movies and drama shows from Taiwan, Japan, korea, etc. Without youtube, I would have miss alot of nice shows and the days at home would have been much more boring.
The other website I preferred is www.friendster.com . This website is also used by many people. Users will have their own page which allows them to add a profile of themselves, add their photos onto the site, and also others to add comments about them. From this website, I get to know some updates of my friends and even friends whom I had lost contact with.
